Hamilton Clay Target Club Monthly competition. Saturday January 19 2008.

On Saturday in perfect conditions, Hamilton Clay Target Club hosted their first competition for the year with 30 shooters coming from Ballarat, Warrnambool, Horsham, Mount Gambier as well as local clubs to compete for the trophies over 3 events.

A 25 target pointscore competition was held first with 75 points for a perfect score being the aim. No one was able to achieve this but 2 shooters, Rob Hounsell of Horsham and Trevor Pevitt of Tyrendarra, both A grade shooters, each scored 74/75 needing  them to shoot off to determine the overall champion. This was won by Hounsell with 77/78 with Pevitt runner up on 76/78.  AA grade was won by Ashley Bolwell, 73/75 of Horsham from Murray Gruar 72/75 of Hamilton.   B grade saw Cydoni Younie 70/75, Hamilton, take the prize from Club President, Murray Sutherland who scored 69/75.  C grade saw new member to the Hamilton Club and clay target shooting, Brad Manders requiring a shoot off with Russell Edwards also of Hamilton to determine the placings, This eventually went the way of Manders who shot 73/87 to win over Edwards who scored 72/87.

The second event was the favourite 25 target double barrell which saw 7 members, all AA grade shooters,  scoring the possible 25/25.  They were Murray Gruar, Hamilton; Wally Wombell, Myamyn; A Bolwell, Horsham; Roger Duthie, Hamilton; Allan Pollock, Hamilton; Darren Beyer, Mt Gambier; and Peter Cleggett of Hamilton.  This saw another 25 targets shot before Wally Wombell won on 51/51 from Roger Duthie on 50/50  A grade saw a shoot off between Hamilton members Steve Collins and Sam Cuttler for the top placing with Collins on 34/35 defeating Cuttler with 33/35 to take the A grade honours.  B grade saw the Hamilton legend Harry Vaughan, with 27/28 out shoot Mellissa Gruar of Warrnambool on 26/28.  C Grade saw a repeat of the first event with Brad Manders having a top day, scoring 24/25 from Russell Edwards on 21/25.

The next event was the all in handicap with no grades but shooters shooting off a mark between 15 metres for C grade to 24 metres for the top AA grade shooters to even out the competition.  One shooter, Trevor Pevitt of Tyrendarra, shooting off 19 metres was the sole person to score 25/25.  Three shooters scored 24/25 needing a shoot-off to determine 2nd and 3rd positions.  Wally Wombell off 22 metres, scoring 30/31, was second from Sam Cuttler, Hamilton on 19 metres in 3rd place with 29/31, and Harry Vaughan on 17 metres and a score of 27/29 just missing out on a placing.

As time permitted, another event was possible with an all in “off the box” where all shooters shoot from the very back mark of 25 metres and retiring when they miss the target which saw Steven Linke of Hamilton handling the back mark the best and outlasting the other shooters.
